Old city reeled under curfew, Situation relatively calm across Kashmir

Authorities on Wednesday re-imposed curfew in Srinagar parts on Wednesday morning after protests erupted in Srinagar on Tuesday when curfew was lifted in the summer capital.A 61-year-old man was killed in Eidgah area on Tuesday after he lost control on his two-wheeler vehicle during clashes between youth and forces.Nocturnal protests were reported from many parts of Kashmir including Srinagar city. A huge procession was taken out in Natipora, Chanapora and adjoining areas. The protesters amid pro-freedom slogans burnt down the effigy Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.In a bid to foil Kulgam Chalo call given by resistance leaders including Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik, the authorities continued with curfew in south Kashmir districts including Islamabad, Shopian, Kulgam and Pulwama.Hurriyat patriarch Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq were arrested when they came out of their residences in view of the Kulgam chalo call.

“Geelani was arrested by police outside his residence at 12:45 (noon) and was taken to Police Station Humhama,” spokesperson Hurriyat G said.And as per the Hurriyat (M) spokesperson, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was also arrested outside his residence where heavy contingent of police was present when he was leaving for Kulgam.Pertinently the united resistance leadership had announced that on Wednesday (July 27) the people should move towards south Kashmir’s Kulgam district and participate in a rally to be held there after the Zuhar (afternoon) prayers to express solidarity with people and pay glowing tributes to the people who were killed recently.
