The Rahon-Mattewara, longest bridge of Punjab, having 1.50 KM stretch, currently underway across Satluj at war level, would be dedicated to the people in October this year. Disclosing this, a spokesman from the Public Works Department Punjab said that the commencing of the bridge would open new vistas of development. On completion of the bridge, the distance between Nawanshahr and Ludhiana would be cut short by 19 kilometres, he added. The 1.50 KM long stretch of the bridge is being constructed at a cost of Rs. 70 crore said he and informed that earlier the length of the bridge was 0.75 KM but with the increase in width of natural flow of Satluj River towards Rahon considerably, the length of the bridge had to be increased accordingly. He said that besides approach roads, there would be as many as 34 spans having 1219.6 metre length. The part falling in Ludhiana district has been already been completed and now the bridge and approach road from Rahon side would be constructed. The work is going on at war level as the Punjab Chief Minister, Mr. Parkash Singh Badal has been taking keen interest in realising the dream of the residents of the Doaba region to connect them with Malwa region by ensuring shortest distance between the two. The bridge would not just minimise the distance but it will ultimately prove a boon for giving a fillip to trade and industry in the state, said he.
