Ensure zero tolerance to child abuse, corporal punishment: Shaleen Kabra

Commissioner Secretary, School Education Department Mr. Shaleen Kabra today called upon the heads of the Government and private educational institutions and other officer to ensure zero tolerance to child abuse and corporal punishment to students both in Government and private schools. Mr Kabra was speaking at a Video-Conference held with Directors, School Education Kashmir and Jammu, Chief Education Officers of 22 Districts of the State and other officials to review the status of complaints and discuss the modalities for preventing child abuse and corporal punishment in schools. Number of students and parents also joined the conference from their respective districts to share their views on the vital subject. The parents stressed on the need to have a strong framework to stop corporal punishment in schools.

Reviewing the action taken report of complaints received from last fifteen days, the Commissioner Secretary impressed upon officers for pursuing the cases forcefully.

It was informed that Education Department has recently started a helpline to inform about the child abuse. Nodal officers have also been appointed for reporting and redressal of the complaints of physical violence against school children.With regards to recent incident of abuse of tribal student at a hostel, It was informed that the accused warden has been arrested. In another case Government had dissolved management body of a private school in Srinagar after Education Department had received the complaint of beating of a class 8th student by the Principal.
