Without salaries for the last 2 years, daily wage workers working in Tourism Department Tuesday staged a massive protest near civil secretariat Srinagar. They threatened to observe hunger strike outside the residence of Chief Minister on the day of Eid if government fails to release their wages. The protest march was led by Tourism Casual Labourers Union Mir Sarwar. As the protesters carrying placards and banners reached near civil secretariat, police swung into action and detained scores of protesting daily rated workers.“We have been working in the department from past 10 years. We are given due regard when officials need our services and ignored when they don’t need us. During floods we were forced to work like cattle but alas despite this we are being deprived from our due wages. We seek justice and to get it we have decided to take to roads,” the protesting casual labourers told CNS.

They alleged that the PDP-BJP government was following same discriminatory policies with ad hoc workers in the Kashmir region as was the policy of the previous regime. The protesters alleged that daily wagers working in the department were not being paid. The Union president Mir Sarwar while talking to reporters declared that all the casual labourers will observe hunger strike on the day of Eid-ul-Fitur outside CM residence in case government does not release wages before Eid.
