Post Cocoon Sector to be promoted for boosting silk industry in the State

Principal Secretary Agriculture Production Department, Mr. Sandeep Naik today convened an officers meeting to review the functioning of the Sericulture Department here today.Director Sericulture, Dr Malik Farooq, senior officers of Central Silk Board, SKUAST and Sericulture Development Department  were present in the meeting.The meeting discussed threadbare the activities of the Department and associated agencies besides measures undertaken for the promotion and development of silk industry in the State.The strategies and the road map to develop and promote silk industry in the state came under discussion.The Principal Secretary emphasized enhancement of Cacoon productivity and quality besides better marketing facilities across the State. He laid stress on mulberry plantation on state and private land. He also urged for adopting modern techniques to enhance the sericulture production in the State. He asked the officers to put in more efforts to push up the production growth for overall development of Sericulture sector in the State.The Principal Secretary asked the Department to initiate the process of filling departmental vacancies by referring to recruiting agencies and by giving promotions under rules.

Earlier, the Director Sericulture gave detailed brief about departmental activities. The meeting was informed that the state Government in collaboration with CSB has already initiated measures of development for providing sustainable and viable livelihood security to thousands of families associated with this industry.He said there has been improved substantial progress in the pre-cocoon sector and Cocoon production and cocoon quality has improved substantially. He said there is need to develop Post Cocoon Sector simultaneously so that entire cocoons produced are consumed within the state for further value addition and employment generation.The meeting was further informed that initiatives like installation of Automatic Reeling Machines are being taken to enhance silk yarn production both qualitatively and quantitatively. Similarly some new initiatives like supply of chawki reared worms, improved silkworm rearing kits and scientifically sound rearing houses have been taken to improve the productivity and quality of cocoons.
