Thousands participated in Tanvir’s funeral procession

Amid protests and clashes the youth shot dead by government forces for being a militant was buried in Martyrs Grave Yard Batamaloo here on Wednesday. Thousands of people participated in the last rites of Tanvir Sultan a native of Batamaloo, presently putting up in Bemina locality. Tanvir according to the government was a militant who was killed while he fired upon a search party in Kud area of Udhampur district, a claim vehemently refuted by family members who termed the killing of Tanvir as cold blooded murder.Eyewitnesses said that body of Tanvir was handed over to family on Wednesday morning. At three different places the funeral prayers in absentia were offered to the slain youth. Muslim League Chairman Mushtaq-ul-Islam, senior separatist leader Shakil Ahmed Bakshi and others addressed mourners in Batamaloo area. They termed the killing of Tanvir as a blot on Indian face and said that he was not a militant.Reports said that shortly after Tanvir was laid to rest, clashes erupted in Batamaloo and Bemina areas between protesters and police. Reports said that police used tear-smoke shells to disperse the agitating youth.Witnesses said that during the funeral procession Basharat Sultan, the brother of the slain youth suffered heart attack and he was immediately shifted to Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Soura.The normal life was badly affected in Batamaloo and Bemina area due to the spontaneous shutdown and clashes between police and protesters throughout the day.
