A daylong awareness programme regarding ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ was held under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner, Shopian at district administrative complex.While speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commisioner said that the Constitutions of all democratic countries of the world guarantee equal rights to both genders and primary education is now a fundamental right. He said that when a girl is empowered of her rights, the society at large is ensured of its sustainability. He impressed that parents should come forward in educating the girl child and their role is indispensible in reducing the rate of dropouts.Later scholarship to the tune of Rs. 3 lakh was distributed among the girl students of various educational institutions who had brought laurels by securing positions in the results of secondary and higher secondary examinations.Besides, 1650 bags were distributed among the girl students up to 5th standard. Various cultural programmes were presented by the students which conveyed the importance of female education.District Programme Officer, Officers from Education and Health Department besides Child Development Project Officers, Supervisors and Anganwadi workers in large number were present on the occasion.
