Multiple strategies being worked out to control dog menace: Dr. Nirmal Singh

Deputy Chief Minister, Dr. Nirmal Singh today said that to control stray dog population, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is in process of developing one more facility at Tengpora Srinagar with a capacity of 60 surgeries per day.Replying to a question of Mohammad Muzaffar Parray in the House, the Deputy Chief Minister informed that since killing of street dogs is banned, multiple strategies are being worked upon to tide over the dog menace.Dr. Singh informed that Jammu Municipal Corporation has started sterilization/ immunization programme since December 22, 2014 whereby 4-10 dogs are sterilized daily. Similarly, SMC in collaboration with SKUAST and with available infrastructure at Alestang, Suhama Veterinary College around 15-20 sterilizations take place daily, he said  and added that with the operation of Tengpora facility by SMC, the number of surgeries per day will increase to 80.

The Deputy Chief Minister informed that in order to reduce the multiplication rate of  street dogs, which mainly depend on non vegetable energy rich food, JMC/SMC and other allied departments are trying to put in place an efficient garbage management system.Dr. Singh also informed that the Government is taking all measures to ensure safety of human beings from stray dogs. He said that Health Department is running anti-rabies clinics where vaccines are being provided 24x7 to dog bite patients free of cost.
