Says Agri development essential for improving economy of state

Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura today laid emphasis on agriculture and allied sectors to boost the economic growth and economic status of the common man.The Minister was addressing XXIV meeting of ICAR Regional Committee comprising the states of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand at Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar today.The Minister said that Indian council Of Agricultural Research as a premier and frontline institution has played a major role in changing the Agricultural scenario of the country. The country is self reliant in food production and nobody goes to the bed with a hungary stomach which was not the case prior to the formation of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.The Minister said that agriculture and allied sectors are the major source of livelihood for a major chunk of population in Jammu and Kashmir. He said it is endowed with rich biodiversity, medicinal and aromatic plants and has a congenial atmosphere for growing of seasonal crops particularly in Horticulture.The Minister said translational Research projects in Mushrooms, Apiculture, Olericulture, Pisiculture will give boost to the farmer incomes and reduce dependence on government employment in the state.The Minister said Kashmir Willow is having tremendous economic value and a pilot programme under AICRP for willows has to consider harnessing the economic potential of this niche tree.
