DEC reviews progress under NERP

As part of Election Commission of India’s new intensive drive National Electoral Rolls Purification (NERP) 2016, a progress review meeting with Deputy Commissioners of Jammu province was held under the chairmanship of Deputy Election Commissioner of India Sandeep Saxena.The meeting was attended by Chief Electoral Officer, J&K Shantmanu, DC Kathua Ramesh Kumar, DC Samba, Sheetal Nanda, Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Rishpal Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner Jammu Rifat Kohli and other officers.The NERP 2016 process includes enrolment of all eligible citizens and removal of repeated and multiple entries, dead electors, shifted and absent voters, correction of errors in EPIC and removal of other data errors. During the drive, repeat images will also be corrected, missing photographs will be collected and poor quality images will be replaced by good quality photographs.Deputy Election Commissioner reviewed the district wise progress and enquired about the on-field application process and suggested ways to simplify and streamline the NERP process.It was informed that the issues pertaining to rationalizing of polling stations in a comprehensive manner shall also be addressed during the period. The election department in this endeavour aims to improve the fidelity of the electoral rolls and re-organisation of polling stations with Basic Minimum Facilities (BMFs) for voters' facilitation and convenience.Deputy Election Commissioner also elaborated  upon  the ECs planned uniform, two-page application format to deal with requests ranging from inclusion as a new voter to deletion/correction in the rolls adding that the idea is to have a single, all-encompassing form to make the enrolment and rolls updating procedure voter-friendly. This would also enable in digitization of all data and creating a central database accessible pan-India.
