Jammu and Kashmir Police has booked a “notorious” drug peddler from Kupwara district of north Kashmir under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) as part of its drive to curb the menace of drug abuse in the Valley.Farooq Ahmad Mir alias Farooq Codeine son of Sanullah Mir of Muqam, Awoora  was arrested last week along with large quantity of codeine and was booked under FIR number 09/2016 u/s 8/21, 29 NDPS Act in Police Station Trehgam, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kupwara, Aijaz Ahmad Bhat told news agency GNS.The notorious drug peddler was today shifted to Kathua District Jail after being booked under Public Safety Act”, the officer said.

Mir was arrested several times since 2010 following recovery of large quantity of contraband substance from his possession, the officer said.In 2010, Mir was arrested along with the large quantity of banned drugs and was booked under FIR number 100/2010 under section 6/13 Drug Control Act in Police Station Kupwara.In 2011, Mir was arrested along with banned drugs and a case under FIR number 303/2011 u/s 15 Excise Act in police station Kupwara.In 2012, Mir was arrested along with large quantity of banned drugs and was booked under FIR number 164/2012 u/s 8/21 NDPS Act in Police Station Kupwara.“The drive against the growing menace in the district will continue and the stringent action will be taken any one found involved in the drug peddling”, the officer said.
