DC Anantnag asks officers to requisite infrastructure to minimize recurrence of water borne diseases

Keeping in view the recurrence of Hepatitis and other water borne diseases in the district, the District Development Commissioner Mr. Muneer Ul Islam, today passed strict orders to the officers of concerned departments to create proper sanitation and drainage infrastructure in the district to minimize the contamination of water bodies.The DDC said that with the onset of summer season, various cases of Hepatitis A, B, C and E were reported from many areas of the district, while people living alongside the rivers and nallahs were affected the most.He said that the basic reason for the annual recurrence of the water borne diseases is the lack of proper toilet and drainage facilities in these areas, which needs to be checked by constructing toilet points and proper drainage system under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.  He said under the Swacchh Bharat Abhiyan ample financial support would be provided for improving the sanitation and drainage network of the district. 

The DDC passed strict orders to the functionaries of Rural Development Department to provide 100% toilet facility to the identified areas in 4 months’ time. He said the progress of the work would be reviewed on monthly basis and no laxity would be tolerated.The DDC also urged the people, especially those living in the catchment areas of rivers and rivulets to minimize the discharge of solid waste and other effluents into the water, which may otherwise cause outbreak of diseases like Hepatitis and Jaundice.Calling for a collaborative effort from all the concerned departments to make Anantnag a clean and green district, the DDC asked the officers to organize regular cleanliness and sanitation drives across all the blocks especially around water bodies, parks and roads by involving local population and students. He said that the role of departments should not only be limited to provide infrastructure but also to generate awareness about the ill effects of various kinds of pollution, especially water pollution.The meeting was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mr Muhammad Younis Malik, ACD, Mr. Gulzar Ahmad, ACR, CPO, BDOs of the district besides other officers concerned.
