Govt mulls taking over School for Blind, Deaf and Dumb Solina

Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon today stressed on the need to upgrade the facilities for special children in Kashmir to improve their living conditions.While chairing a meeting to review the functioning of various facilities for specially abled children in both public and private sector, the Divisional Commissioner said that all such institutions should be linked together so that they can serve their purpose effectively and efficiently.Dr Samoon directed the Deputy Commissioner Srinagar and Director Social Welfare Kashmir to explore the modalities for taking over of special school for blind, deaf and dumb children at Solina by Department of Social Welfare. 

He said school in government control would make it easy to meet financial requirement of the vital school.Dr Samoon also directed DC Srinagar to look into the case of compensation to be given to the school in lieu of land acquired to build Rambagh flyover and road widening.The meeting was informed that the school serves 110 children including 15 visually impaired and other physically challenged children. Against the overall requirement of Rs 8 lakh the school, which is run by an NGO only Rs 1.5 lakh is provided by the Department of Social Welfare. The school also runs an educational institution for normal children with a total roll of 250 children.

The Divisional Commissioner emphasized on establishing three special schools one each in North, South and Central Kashmir to benefit each and every needy child in the valley. He said that efforts should be made to provide world class facilities for special children so that they can become independent in their lives.The meeting was attended by officials of Social Welfare and Custodian Departments, besides Chotey Taray Foundation, Koshish, Humanity Welfare Organisation, National Association for Blind and chairperson Deaf and Dumb school.
