Advisor to Governor Khursheed Ahmed Ganaie Saturday said that he will seek a report from the Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control Department about the alleged reports that sand mafia in league with officials of the I&FC department Division Sumbal extracting sand illegally and then trading it. People from Sumbal Sonawari led by General Secretary Young Men Youth Federation Kashmir Fayaz Ahmed Dhobi told CNS that Executive Engineer I&FC Division Sumbal Ghulam Jeelani has put the lives of Sumbal Sonawari Division into danger as he has been allowing sand mafia to extract sand illegally from the River Jehlum. “You will not believe that this Executive Engineer grabbed money from the boatmen of Hajin and allowed them to extract sand illegally from the river Jehlum. After paying money to ‘corrupt’ officer these boatmen started extracting sand that resulting in caving in bund and road near Hajin Sonawari,” they said adding that Executive Engineer I&FC Sumbal Division has been running a sand mafia and if probe is ordered a big scandal will come to fore. When CNS contacted advisor to Governor Khurshid Ahmed Ganaie he said that he will seek a report from Chief Engineer I&FC Department. “If allegations are true, strict action will be taken against the culprits,” he said.
