IIMC Chairman interacts with students Calls for following ethics of journalism

With an objective of discussing new ideas related to changes taking place in the field of journalism due to introduction of new social media tools, Chairman of Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) and former Union Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting Uday Kumar Varma interacted with students of IIMC during his recent visit to IIMC Jammu centre.While addressing the students, the Chairman asked them to follow ethics of journalism and work for bringing a change in the society. He spoke on various issues ranging from regulation of social media, its use and misuse by the news organisations.He said that technology will play an important role in the times to come, thereby, increasing the participation of common man in dissemination and consumption of media content. There is an immediate need that the youth of the country, especially those who want to excel in the field of journalism, know pros and cons of using social media as a tool of journalism, he added.

Special Officer, IIMC Jammu centre, Manohar Khajuria informed the Chairman that besides providing rent-free accommodation for Jammu centre and hostel facility for visiting guest faculty and students, the Government of Jammu & Kashmir has allotted 122 kanals of land for setting up the institute. The permanent campus will be set up at village Keran (Pattian) in Bantalab, Jammu.Assistant Professor Anubhav Mathur and Academic Associate Ravia Gupta, besides students of the institute were also present in the meeting.The regional centre of IIMC was started in Jammu during 2012-13 with an aim to provide quality education in the field of journalism. Ever since its inception, the Centre has maintained a legacy of producing all India toppers. While Sugam Singhal bagged first position in the first session, Avantika Gupta and Jeevan Kaur brought laurels to the centre in 2013-14 and 2014-15 respectively.
