The Irrigation department, Punjab, has geared up its efforts to supply water through canal with a view to provide sufficient irrigation water to the farmers of the State.Disclosing this here today, Secretary Irrigation Kahan Singh Pannu said that on account of dry climate spell during Rabi Season this year a drought like situation is developing in the region. This climatic situation is likely to adversely affect the productivity of wheat crop.In a meeting held today with all the field Executive Engineers of Canals, he directed the officers that all the canals should be run with full strength and the water should be made available up to the tails, so that farmers can irrigate their crop. It is mentioned here that in the State of Punjab 30% cultivable area is irrigated by canals.

Mr. Pannu informed the field officers that sufficient water is available in the dams of the State and directed the officers to ensure that farmers do not face any problem of water for irrigation. Mr. Pannu informed that level of water in Bhakra Dam is 1640 feet as against 1628 feet last year and similarly level of water in Pong Dam is 1343 feet as against 1326 feet last year and sufficient water to the extent of 498 meter is available in Ranjit Sagar Dam.In the meeting, Mr. G.S. Wasson, Chief Engineer, Canals and Superintending Engineers along with Deputy Collectors of the Department were also present.
