Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Capt Amarinder Singh today told the Badals that they must not take it for granted that they were there for full five years. He said, the governments are indeed supposed to be elected for five years but if they don’t perform they can well be thrown out much before their term.“If you don’t perform and continue to resort to the arm twisting tactics you may have to go much before that”, he told Badals while addressing a massive gathering of people that had converged in the lawns of the Geeta Bhawan here today.Accompanied by senior party leaders including Congress Legislative Party leader Sunil Jakhar, PCC vice president Kewal Dhillon, general secretaries Fateh Jang Bajwa and Kikki Dhillon, Capt Amarinder arrived to a tumultuous reception by the local Congress leaders and workers. They included Gurpreet Kangar, who had organised the programme, MLAs Ajaib Singh Bhatti and Joginder Singh Panjgraian and former legislators Harminder Jassi, Ajit Singh Shant, Makhan Singh, Jagbir Brar, Chiranji Lal Garg and others.Referring to the atrocities and excesses being resorted to by the Akalis particularly by Sikander Singh Maluka in Rampura Phull, Virsa Singh Valtoha in Tarn Taran and Bikram Singh Majithia in Majithia area, the PCC President asked them, “what sadistic pleasure do you get in victimising poor and innocent people?” He said, such acts are committed only by the cowards and Maluka had proved, not once by repeatedly so many times, that he is a real coward.Challenging the Akalis about their survival in the government for full five year term, he said, the parliamentary elections were closing in and people were thoroughly upset and disappointed with this government. “I am sure as the situation is developing the Akalis cannot win even a single parliamentary seat”, he said, while remarking that will be the beginning of their end. Democracy he said, “does not mean that you are going to be there for full five years without performance as people will soon check you out”.Listing the failures of the government, the former Chief Minister said, while they were imposing harsh taxes on the people saying that they did not have any money for the welfare schemes, for themselves they had bought a helicopter worth Rs 38 crores. Not just that, he added, they were visiting the foreign countries at the cost of the state exchequer.Maintaining that they had not fulfilled a single promise the Akalis had made before the elections, he asked, where is the ‘aata-daal’ for the poor, where are the laptops for the students and where is the unemployment allowance for the 47 lakh unemployed people of Punjab. He said, this government had simply cheated people by making false promises and delivering nothing.Addressing the meeting the CLP leader Sunil Jakhar said that while the government was spending lavishly for its own comforts by buying helicopters, it had no money for the public. He said, unnerved by the massive response of the people to Capt Amarinder Singh’s programme, it had now stopped providing fuel for his security vehicles saying it had no money. He said, but nothing could deter the PCC president from reaching out to people and he made it a point whether he had any security or not he will go wherever his workers needed him to go.
