2nd Sharjah Women Sports Cuplaunches today at the Sharjah Ladies Club

The highly anticipated second edition of the Sharjah Women Sports Cup will launch today (Saturday) at the Sharjah Ladies Club’s (SLC) sports hall and extends until Sunday, where 135 employees from11 local government and private institutions will compete for the event’s coveted volleyball, basketball and archery trophies.First day contestants, who hail from different corporate societies and hotels, will show their grit in the volleyball and archery competitions. Besides SLC and its branches, contending firms include the Sharjah Co-operative Society, Holiday Inn-and Hilton Hotels, Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, SajayaGirl’s Center, Al Jawaher Reception and Convention Centre (JRCC), the Supreme Council of Family Affairs, Air Arabia and the Roads and Transport Authority. 

Nada Al Naqbi, Manager of Women Sports Department, spoke on the event: "We’re delighted to have completed all preparations and final touches for the cup’slaunch - even more so because of the eagerness of Sharjah firms to participate this year. Their contagious enthusiasm proves the success of last year’s first edition, and bolsters it great feedback. We expect to see strong and exciting competition among these capable women athletes."Al Naqbi praised the efforts made by Her Highness SheikhaJawaherbint Mohammed Al Qasimi, the wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, and SLC Chairperson, in promoting community awareness about the importance of women's sports as a lifestyle, its promotion in the UAE, and her continuous support to enable women to enter the playing field.

The activityaims to shine a spotlight on the value of sports practiceamong women, especially its role of in the development of women’s production capacities and maintaining psychological and social stability. This year’sedition boasts a slew ofchoice events and programmes, including Kung Fu exercises, a lecture on healthy nutrition and an informative speech on breast cancer organized by the Pink Caravan – an initiative by Friends of Cancer Patients (FoCP), which raises awareness and challenges common misconceptions about breast cancer, under the patronage of SheikhaJawaher Al Qasimi.

Established in 2014 by the SLC Women Sports Department, the Sharjah Women Sports Cupis a competitivesports and entertainment event which brings together public and private sector employees in the Emirate of Sharjah. The initiative aims to engage female staff in recreational sports activities, to encourage the discovery and development of emerging talents, and to contribute to the progress of women's sports in the UAE, and Sharjah in particular.
