Alstom bags 150 mn euro contract from Lucknow Metro

Railways equipment and services provider Alstom Transport on Monday said it has bagged a contract worth over 150 million euro from Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC).The company will provide the LMRC with coaches and signalling solution for the new metro network of the city under the order which is valued at over Rs.1,100 crore."We are delighted that LMRC has entrusted Alstom with the supply of its first metro," said Dominique Pouliquen, senior vice president, Alstom Transport Asia-Pacific in a statement. "This is an important project for Lucknow's inhabitants as they will soon be able to commute from the north to the south of the city onboard a metro that is safe, fast, reliable and environmentally friendly." Under the contract, Alstom Transport will supply 20 'Metropolis' trainsets, each composed of four metro cars. Each car will be fitted with air-conditioning and a passenger information system, the company said.The metro cars will be produced at the company's Sri City train manufacturing facility in Andhra Pradesh.

According to Alstom, more than 4,500 Metropolis coaches have been sold worldwide since 1998. They are currently being employed in cities like Singapore, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Amsterdam and Paris.Furthermore, the company will provide 'Urbalis' communication-based train control (CBTC) solution to the LMRC.The CBTC controls the movement of the trains, enabling them to run at higher frequencies and speeds in total safety."The headway (interval between services) of the Lucknow metro will be 100 seconds," the statement said.The signalling system will be jointly supplied by Alstom's sites in Bengaluru and Saint-Ouen, France.

Lucknow's new metro line is expected to be around 23-km-long and include 22 stations comprising of 19 elevated ones -- while the remaining three will be located underground.The project is expected to be executed in two phases, starting with a first corridor of 8.4 km.The first corridor line is expected to carry about 430,000 passengers per day from the initial year of operations. The number of users is expected to increase to over one million by 2030.The company has earlier participated in metro rail projects in Chennai, Delhi and Kochi.
