Eminent journalist Mahmudur Rahman jailed in Bangladesh

Eminent journalist and writer Mahmudur Rahman was handed down three years of imprisonment by a Dhaka court on Thursday. The Amar Desh acting editor has been suffering in the jail for over a year for his strong writings. The verdict was pronounced in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission for not submitting his wealth statement.Third Special Judge Abu Ahmed Jamaddar handed down the verdict on Thursday at the court set up on Alia Madrassah ground in the capital city Dhaka’s Bakshibazar.

In the verdict, the court fined Tk 1 lakh or to suffer one more month in default, too.The case was filed by the ACC as noted journalist and writer Mahmudur Rahman had refused to submit his wealth statement.On March 13, 2010, the ACC sent a notice to the journalist asking him to submit his wealth statement.

ACC deputy director Nur Ahmed filed the case with Gulshan Police Station in the Dhaka on June 13, 2010 as he did not reply to the notice.Mahmadur Rahman is known as a rebel journalist in Bangladesh.  He is an author of several books.
