Highlighting the need of framing a strategy of protecting Bundhs and Nallahs, District Development Commissioner Kulgam, Ravinder Kumar Bhat today convened a meeting of the people associated with Sand, Bajri and Stone excavation from Nallahs. The meeting was aimed at identifying spots where the excavation work can be carried out keeping in view the employment sector and the protective strategy against floods in nallas of Vaishav, Sandran and other Nallahs of the district.

Terming the protection of Bunds inevitable for the safety of the people and their property, the District Development Commissioner stressed upon the people not to excavate Sand, Bajri or Stones from or near the river Bunds. ‘’There are huge number of youth who are earning their bread through the business of excavation of Sand, Bajri and Stones from Nallahs. However, there is an urgent need of streamlining the working strategy and framing a methodology so that the business must not affect the course of Nallahs and importantly the protection of the Bunds has to be prioritized’’. 

The excavation work if done in the right strategy can not only provide employment to many families, but can also be useful in increasing the carrying capacity of the Nallahs. While remembering the level of destruction of 2014 floods, the District Development Commissioner highlighted the fact that efficient measures are needed to tackle such situations.Additional Deputy Commissioner, Superintending Engineer of Irrigation and Flood Control Department and Officers from other departments were present on this occasion.
