Hyderabad to get additional water from Krishna, Godavari

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday directed officials to prepare plans for additional supply of water from Krishna and Godavari rivers to Hyderabad to meet the drinking water requirement of the state capital.The chief minister, who reviewed the drinking water supply situation in the city with top officials, asked them to ensure that every house get drinking water through taps and that there is no shortage.He also directed them to take steps to meet water requirements of the industry and commercial establishments.He noted that Hyderabad and the surrounding areas have a population of 1.42 crore and they require 42.58 TMC of water annually.

From available water resources and with the completion of ongoing works to bring water from Krishna and Godavari rivers, the city will have the availability of 32 TMC of water. The chief minister said to bridge the supply gap, additional water should be brought from the two rivers and for this special reservoirs should be constructed.Hyderabad has nine lakh drinking water connections. Chandrasekhar Rao asked the officials of Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board to find out how many more connections were required in the limits of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and take steps to provide the required connections.The officials briefed Rao of the progress of ongoing works to lay pipelines to supply water from the two rivers.The chief minister said Hyderabad would also get water from Palamuru lift irrigation project.
