Hurriyat Conference (G) on Tuesday said that the pro-freedom conglomerate was receiving complaints of extortion by the police from the families of the youth arrested in a series of nocturnal raids across the city.“Some parents of the arrested youths complained that police is demanding hefty amount as penalty for the release of their wards otherwise they are warned of slapping PSA against them,” a Hurriyat spokesman said in a statement issued to GNS said.The spokesman said that with the onset of the holy month of Ramadan, the police have started crackdown against the youths of the many areas of downtown. He said dozens of innocent students have been arrested and detained in different police stations where they were being subjected to worst kind of “custodial torture”.
“Many youths have gone underground to evade arrest but the police is continuously harassing their families. They are being warned of arrest in case they fail to produce their children before police,” the spokesman said.“Scores of youths of Nawakadal, Rajouri Kadal, Kawdara and Zaina Kadal areas of downtown have been locked up in different police stations from last 15 days. However no case is registered against them,” he added.The spokesman also expressed concern over the renewed process of crackdowns by the Indian army in different villages of Pulwama district where people are forced to wait in long queues for hours and then paraded in a “humiliating way”.
“This 90s like situation has created fear and threat among the common people of those areas. Many people have left attending late night Ramadan prayers at the Masjids,” the spokesman said.“Since the inception of the PDP-BJP alliance, the human rights violations have shown an increasing trend and a war like situation has been created from Jammu to Srinagar against the common people,” he added.The spokesman demanded release of all the arrested youths and other political prisoners before the Eid.
