The Education Department has decided to rediscover and bring to light the great contribution of the State’s legendary literary personalities to JK’s treasured cultural milieu. The Department would be, in collaboration with the Cultural Academy, commemorating the great literary contribution of some of the noted teachers. This was announced by the Minister for Education, Naeem Akhtar at a meeting convened at S P Higher Secondary School here today to chalk out the programme for observing Nadim (Dinanath) Centenary.Regional Head, Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Ayaz Rasool Nazki, Former Deputy Chairman Legislative Council, Mohammad Yousuf Taing, Secretary Cultural Academy, Aziz Hajini, Joint Director Education Kashmir, Syed Abid Rashid, representatives of Radio Kashmir, Doordarshan Srinagar, Information Department and Education Department were present on the occasion.

Besides, literary personalities and artists including M Y Taing, Prof Rehman Rahi, Rukhsana Jabeen, Ratan Lal Talashi and Waheed Jeelani were also present. It was decided in the meeting that in order commemorate the contribution of Dinanath Nadim, a prominent Kashmiri poet of 20th Century, this year shall be celebrated as Dinanath Nadim Centenary.

The Minister called for co-opting the family of the late Nadim for chalking out centenary programmes. Dinanath Nadim was born in 1916 in Srinagar city and with him began an era of modern Kashmiri poetry. He is undoubtedly the most innovated and sensitive Kashmiri writer, who brought about the post-1947 renaissance in Kashmiri literature. So much so, that the complete period is referred to as the Nadim era.

Dinanath Nadim was in-fact a teacher by profession and as such the Education Department has decided to take a lead in celebrating the Dinanath Nadim’s Centenary. The Minister said a broad-based committee will be constituted to detail a roadmap of activities to be undertaken as part of the said celebration, adding that it will be formally launched in the first week of August‘15. “The aim of organizing such programmes is to make aware our young generation about the State’s rich intellectual and cultural treasure”, Akhtar said.
