Describing educational institutes and teaching fraternity as the fountains of prosperity and development, the Minister for Higher Education, Mohammad Akbar Lone said that educational institutes have pivotal role in reforming and shaping of the society.The Minister was addressing the Annual Day function of Women College, M.A Road here on Saturday.MLA, Amira Kadal, Mr. Nasir Aslam Wani, Secretary Higher Education Department, Sheikh Mushtaq Ahmad, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Mr. Farooq Ahmad Shah, Director Colleges Kashmir, Prof T.A. Kawoos, Dean College Development Council, Prof. M.M. Shah, Principal Government College for Women, Prof. Shaheen Altaf, Principals of various Degree Colleges, education illumines, faculty members and large number of students of the College were present on the occasion,While appreciating the role and contribution of the College, Mr. Lone said that this prestigious college holds special status and has historic importance in the educational background of the State disseminating and imparting quality education to the students especially to the women folk, besides producing educationists, scientists and nation builders for last several decades. He urged upon the present college authorities to maintain the tempo of past achievements of the College so that historic image of this prestigious college is sustained.The Minister urged upon all the college heads and faculty members to utilise their experience and skills for channelizing the potential and capability of the students in proper direction so that they can exhibit their talent in all the spheres of life and lead the State to new horizon of success and prosperity.

Lone underscored the importance of extracurricular activities and modern electronic revolution and said extracurricular activities are important for mental and physical development of the students, adding that use of modern technology in education system is signifgicant for better results.Mr. Lone said that Chief Minister Mr. Omar Abdullah is keen for the upliftment and upgradation of the education sector of the State and revolutionary steps have been initiated by the government in this regard.MLA Amira Kadal Nasir Aslam Wani also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the contribution of the college in producing galaxy of luminaries besides providing educational platform to the female folk of the Valley to empower them.Secretary Higher Education, Sheikh Mushtaq also highlighted the policies and achievements of the higher education department on the occasion.On the occasion, the Minister also released Annual College Newsletter “The Harbinger” and released various books authored by the College faculty members Various mesmerizing and colourful programs were also presented by the college students, highly applauded by the audience.Later, the Minister distributed medals, trophies and certificates of appreciation among the students of the College for their excellent performance in the curricular and extra-curricular activities. Earlier, the Principal of the College, Prof. Shaheen Altaf presented College Annual Report and highlighted the achievements and issues of the College.Mr. Lone assured College Principal that their genuine demands and issues will be redressed in a phased manner on priority. He also assured the College authorities for every possible help and support for the development and upgradation of the College infrastructure.
