When on the second Friday of the ongoing holy month of Ramazan the state authorities allowed people offer congregational Friday prayers at Jamia Masjid, violent clashes between police and protestors were witnessed in the old city.According to KNS correspondent, as the congregational Friday prayers concluded in the historic Jamia Masjid witnessing the participation of thousands of people, youth assembled in groups and raised pre-freedom slogans.With the protestors marching forward, police tried to disperse the procession and fired tear gas shells towards the crowd.
With the mob turning violent, giving tough time to police to pacify the situation, several pellets were also fired upon the protestors, said the witnesses.They added that several protestors were also injured during the police action.The photo journalists claimed that the security forces deployed in old city didn’t allow them to discharge their professional duties. They said that they were not allowed to cover the protest demonstrations and police asked them to shut their cameras down.The situation in the old city was grim till the last reports came in.Pertinently, last Friday the state authorities foiled ‘Sopore chalo’ march called by the separatist leaders against the killing spree in the town.
