NPP pays rich tributes to Jammu Martyrs of 1966

Chief Patron Prof. Bhim Singh Member NIC, Shri Harsh Dev Singh MLA (Chairman NPP), Shri Yashpal Kundal MLA (General Secretary),  Mr. Bansi Lal Sharma (Political Advisor JKNPP), Ms Anita Thakur and H.C. Jalmeria Adv (General Secretaries), Pushvinder Manhas, (Sr. Vice-President Young Panthers), Gagan Pratap Singh ( Spokesperson Young Panthers) , NPSU President Partap Singh Jamwal and hundreds of NPP activists paid heavy tributes to the student martyrs who were killed by police bullets inside GGM Science College, Jammu on 17th and 18th October 1966 during the Congress rule.  The students Congress led by Bhim Singh was demanding establishment of Jammu university, Technical Colleges, Ayurvedic College and  upgrading the status of Agricultural Graduates at par with MBBS and Engineering Graduates. 

The students had launched a movement under the leadership of Bhim Singh.  Three students were killed in Science College namely Gulshan Handa, Subash Chandra, and Brijmohan inside Science College premises whereas one student leader S. Gurcharan was killed on 18th in Kanak Mandi while the student procession was marching through the Jammu streets.  Senior Superintendent of  Police who shot S. Gurcharan Singh in fact aimed at Bhim Singh leader of the student movement but could not get Bhim Singh because a senior officer from district administration, Mr. Khosla intervened and saved Bhim Singh.  This was revealed by Mr. Khosla in Delhi this year. 

 Mr. Khosla has also served as Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir in 1986-87.  It was because of the intervention Mrs. Indira Gandhi the then Prime Minister of India that a commission of a enquiry was a set up which had held several police officers and heads of administration in Jammu for the genocide of the students.  More than 53 students were injured in the Science College massacre.While addressing the students and NPSU activists at the memorial site of the students martyrs, Prof. Bhim Singh while paying tributes to the student martyrs said that 47 years ago our student leaders were killed in 1966 who were demanding a university, a 1975 four students were martyred during congress rule in Kishtwar who were demanding a degree college and a student S. Baryam Singh was shot dead by the police in 1978 while the Poonch students were demanding just college amenities for students.  He reminded that when NPP Legislator Shri Harsh Dev Singh became education Minister in 2002 he gave 20 colleges in Jammu and Kashmir without causing or hurting any student.  He said that discrimination against the students and youth has been continuing and it shall not stop till the end of NC-Congress rule in Jammu and Kashmir. Shri Harsh Dev Singh also addressed the students at the memorial site.  Several hundred of students and youth took the oath at the memorial site on the students martyrs day that, “ we the people of Jammu and Kashmir shall fight for justice to everybody and shall eradicate communalism, criminalization, authoritarianism, all forms of corruption and violence so that a secular society is promoted so that all of us live in peace, honour and harmony”.
