While hailing CPI (M) led Tripura government's decision to revoke the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), senior leader and MLA Kulgam Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami has asked state government to take a lead and pursue revocation of this draconian law in Jammu and Kashmir. In a statement issued here, Tarigami has stressed on a need for re-assessment of situation in the state followed by a call on revocation of the AFSPA in the state.  While welcoming the Tripura government’s decision to withdraw AFSPA the CPI (M) senior leader observed that the decision needs to be taken as an eye opener for political mainstream in Jammu and Kashmir who have always voiced their concern over the abuse of the Act.

Tarigami said that in view of a change in security scenario in the State, there is an urgent need to make a serious reassessment of the situation as continuance of AFSPA under the existing situation in the State does not serve any purpose. “I have been persistently demanding revocation of AFSPA from J&K, on the floor of assembly and through my correspondence with the Prime Minister’s office and I am of the firm belief that there is a strong peace constituency in the entire region, including Jammu and Kashmir that yearns for solution of issues through dialogue and reconciliation,” Tarigami said. The MLA Kulgam remarked that there is general feeling in Kashmir and rightly so that the families of the victims of incidents gross human rights violations will get justice only after AFSPA is revoked from the territory.
