India plans to go in for more clean coal technology as thermal power will continue to be mainstay in India's energy mix, Power and Coal Minister Piyush Goyal said on Wednesday."We will look for technologies for clean coal as this will be the mainstay in India's fuel mix even as we strive to address climate concerns," he said addressing the Indo-Japan Energy Forum here organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry.Pointing out that Japan is looking at putting in place 7,200 MW of thermal power over the next five years, Goyal said both countries could collaborate in this area.

"India and Japan can collaborate on the clean technology side. To improvise on the coal technology, both countries can work together and help to assuage the concerns on climate," he said.In his address, Japanese Trade and Industry Minister Yoichi Miyazawa said that "coal is geographically available and will remain an important energy source"."The possibilities for cooperation between the two countries in clean coal are enormous. The government of Japan is keen to expand energy cooperation with India," he said.The Japanese minister also called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
