Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha and Amritsar MP Capt Amarinder Singh today condemned the attack on party leader and leading advocate Vineet Mahajan here yesterday. He warned the police against any laxity that can endanger the life of the lawyer who was attacked earlier also and had to spend several weeks in the hospital.Reacting to yesterday’s attack on Mahajan, during which gunshots were fired at the vehicle he was driving, Capt Amarinder expressed relief that the gunshots did not hit him and he was safe. “But worst could have happened”, he pointed out, adding, this only indicates the laxity being shown by the police in dealing with the culprits who have further been embolden to attack him again.
The former Chief Minister said, Mahajan was being targeted deliberately since he had exposed a senior BJP leader for having dual votes. “This is outrageous and unacceptable that you try to intimidate your political opponents”, he remarked, while adding, “this is no civilised behaviour and must be unanimously condemned by everybody”.Capt Amarinder said that mere registration of an FIR will not serve any purpose. He said, the motives and the culprits are too obvious and they must be brought to book. “Any delay in arresting the culprits by the police will straightway prove that they are being shielded by the government”, he warned while adding, he will ensure that the culprits did not go scotfree at any cost.
The Congress LS Deputy Leader said, Mahajan was an active party leader who had exposed a BJP leader and was obviously being targeted for the same reason. He warned against such acts saying that this will only trigger further rivalry and can vitiate the peaceful atmosphere in the city and the state.
