Srinagar , 18 Oct 2014

With winter approaching, unscheduled and extended power cuts have started infuriating the miseries of people in Kashmir valley. The residents of most of the areas in city including Bemina, Qamarwari, Kursoo Rajbagh accused the Power Development Department (PDP) of resorting to unscheduled power cuts. “In past five days, our area faced several unscheduled power cuts. We will be forced to stage protests if power supply is not provided to us as per the schedule,” Habib-ul-llah, a resident of Bemina told KNS.KNS received complaints from majority of the people of Srinagar that the power supply remains off for hours every day. “The power cuts are so frequent that it’s difficult to count the hours of supply we get. Tentatively we get some six hours of power a day,” complained Muneer Ahmad of Rajbagh.

Meanwhile, consumers from flood hit areas like Batmaloo, Karanagar, Padshahbagh alleged that PDD has taken them for a ride. “Though the PDD claims that they are getting round the clock electricity, the fact is that from last one week we are facing unscheduled power cuts,” said Shabir Ahmad resident of Padshahibagh Srinagar.Consumers told KNS there are frequent cuts in power supply after almost every two to three hours and mostly there is complete black-out in the mornings and evenings. “The situation has gone from bad to worse during past two weeks. The power cuts are more frequent during evening hours. Qamarwari is a metered area and is supposed to get round-the-clock power supply,” they said.

Meanwhile, sources in power department told KNS that the department is likely to implement the new schedule in coming days. “So far no formal curtailment schedule has been drafted by the department. Everything is going on in a haphazard manner,” he added. (KNS)
