The Punjab Government would ensure the proper implementation of Labour Laws besides introducing a package of welfare schemes for construction labour and the necessary directions for compliance of Labour Laws have been issued to concerned authorities. Surjit Kumar Jiyani, Forest Minister and Chairman Punjab Building and Other Constructions Workers Welfare Board, stated this during a review meeting with the board members.  The Minister said that the Punjab Government has chalked out a plan to construct ‘Labour Sheds’ having sitting, drinking water, toilets and other necessary arrangements near the places from where the people hire the construction labour. He said that the concerned authorities have been directed to identify the land for this purpose. Jiyani said that as the construction labour was an unorganized sector, the Punjab Government has decided to expedite the registration project of the construction labour so these labourers could get the benefits from the welfare schemes introduced by Punjab Government. He also laid stress on the need to make the construction labour aware from their rights and welfare schemes so that they could also save them from the exploitation at the construction sites.  Emphasising on the need to upgrade the living standards of construction labourers,  Jiyani said that the Punjab Building and Other Constructions Workers Welfare Board would also prepare a proposal to provide state-of-the-art movable apartments for such labourers so they can live with the all basic amenities besides preparing a pension proposal. Prominent amongst those were present on the occasion included  R.C. Nayyar Principal Secretary, Labour,  P.S. Mand Labour commissioner Punjab, members of board and members from various labour organizations.
