The Punjab government has decided to establish an effective network of de-addiction centers through out the state to weed out drug menace completely.A decision to this effect was taken today by Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Parkash Singh Badal during a high level meeting with a team of renowned doctors of Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh and the senior officers of the state government, held here late evening at his residence. Taking part in the deliberations, Mr. Badal asked the Health and Medical Education Departments to formulate a comprehensive policy plan in coordination with the expert doctors of PGI to save our young generation, which was under a great threat of drug addiction today. For this he also approved to constitute a high level committee comprising the principal secretaries of both the departments, Prof. (Dr.) Ajit Avasthi and Prof. (Dr.) Debasish Basu (both From PGI). He also approved to establish 5 new de-addiction centers in the state at a cost of Rs. 25 crore beside strengthening all the Government Hospitals at District level and all the Health Centers at Sub-pision and Block levels, through providing training to all the doctors and other supporting staff members in a phased manner. The Chief Minister further asked the department to launch a vigorous campaign to aware the masses epically the youth against drug abuse and to make it an essential part in the policy to be formulated. Taking part in deliberations the Director General of Police Sumedh Singh Saini emphasized the need to providing immediate treatment to the youth just started taking drugs before becoming a regular addict. He said that a mechanism of immediate treatment in local hospitals to be evolved just after identifying these type of cases at primary stage. Awareness amongst the parents could play a vital role for the treatment of there Children on identifying there absurd behavior, added Mr. Saini. He further informed to the Chief Minister that the state police had already been geared up to destroy the pipeline of drug traders. Speaking on the occasion Health and Family Welfare Minister Madan Mohan Mittal said that in the first phase a separate de-addiction wings would be establish in all the districts civil hospitals and the same would be extended to all the 117 Community Health Centers (CHCs) in second phase. The experts of various de addiction wings would also impart the training to the doctors and other staff members of CHCs, added Mr. Mittal.
