The Father of Orhopilot – a revolution in total knee and hip replacement surgery – legendary surgeon Prof Frederic Picard today honored the Director of Joint Replacement at Fortis Hospital Mohali Dr Harsimran Singh, the surgeon who has performed maximum surgeries in India using the orthopilot technique.

Known for his innovations in orthopedic treatments he came all the way from Glasgow (U.K), Prof Picard appreciated Dr Harsimran’s precision and deft handling of even the most complex of surgeries using technical competency in knee replacement. Approximately 44000 orthopilot assisted surgeries have been conducted in world of which 7000 have been done by Dr Harsimran in India alone.Interacting with media after felicitating Dr Harsimran, Prof Picard said that the computer assisted total knee replacement surgeries play major role in countries like India where the prevalence of arthritis is high, even amongst the youngsters, and quality of life is affected to great extent.

The advancements in treatment of knee problems are unimaginable. From manual surgery to image guided orthopedic surgery or with CT  scan followed by orthopilot and now soft tissue balancing, nobody can understand better then hundred of patients treated by Dr Harsimran with this latest technology.

Dr Harsimran Singh said knee replacement surgery has seen commendable advances in terms of surgical techniques and the quality of knee implants. “The currently available Zirconium coated knee implants have shown to have a life in excess of 30-35 years in lab studies. The benefits of modern implants are supplemented by the accuracy in surgical technique provided by computer navigation. Computer navigated total knee surgery leaves no margin for error, which is always present in conventional surgical technique,” Dr Harsimran shared.

He added that with the new technology, patients have no pain to fear about, have minimum stay in hospital, bounce back to their routine in few days and have minimum chances of undergoing revision surgeries.

He elaborated that computer assisted knee surgery uses computer software program to calculate angles of knee, enabling surgeon to conduct surgery with greater accuracy and precision of the tune of 1mm variation.

He added that current principle in knee replacement surgery is to re-surface just damaged portion of knee and avoid replacing entire knee in cases where only a limited portion of joint is diseased. Hence, people who have partial knee arthritis are treated by partial knee replacement.Patient requiring TKR have benefit of ligament preserving surgery wherein normal knee ligaments available are preserved making surgery painless, bloodless and offers fast recovery with little need of physiotherapy.
