Urmila Singh, Governor stressed upon the need to foster scientific temper in the students in order to develop rational thinking among the young citizens of the country. She was speaking in the opening ceremony of  150 years celebrations of the  Convent of Jesus and Mary here today.Underlining the necessity for bringing about scientific awareness in the society, Governor said that in a developing country like ours, science could play a major role in development by making us strong, self reliant and modern. It would not just build scientific expertise but inculcate balanced and rational thinking among inpiduals thereby eradicating social evils, superstitions etc. School education should focus upon achieving this objective, she added.

Urmila Singh said that teachers were pillars of the society and played a significant role in shaping the destinies of pupils. She said that they were considered as role models therefore should inspire students by setting an example through their high ideals and good conduct in the society.Governor said that the aim of education should be holistic development of students and added that school curriculum should be formulated keeping this goal in view. She said that children should be aware of their glorious culture and traditional values. They should be made aware in schools and homes as well about the importance of discipline, patriotism and moral values in life so that they grew up as responsible citizens of the country, she added.She urged the parents to create ideal environments at homes so that qualitative values could be restored as children were more influenced by the surroundings they live in. Parents play a pivotal role in discovering the interest and aptitudes of their children and also inspire and motivate the young minds towards the right direction, she added.

Smt Singh congratulated the Convent of Jesus and Mary for completing 150 years of its existence and imparting quality education to students of Shimla and also the state over these years.Sister Alma, Manager Convent of Jesus and Mary presented a memento to the Governor.A colourful cultural programme was also presented on the occasion.Bishop of Shimla, Chandigarh Diocese, Ignatius Mascranahas, Sister Shyma Jose, Principal Convent of Jesus and Mary, alumni of the school including Ms Parminder Mathur and Ms Harinder Hira, former IAS officers, Staff and students of the school were present among others on the occasion.
