Expressing resentment over the increasing cases of attacks on people by the stray dogs, Ganderbal residents have threatened large scale protests if no immediate action is taken on ground.According to the KNS correspondent, people in Ganderbal expressed deep concern over the increased number of attacks by the stray dogs upon women and children- threatening to launch widespread protests if the state authorities fail to tackle the crises. Reports also informed that more than 18 people have been injured by the dog attacks in the area with the concerned officials caring little about the safety the children and women. “Canines have unleashed terror in the area. Now we feel scared to even move out of our house to offer Fajr and Tarawih prayers,” said Hilal Ahmad a local resident. Others of the locality seconded his views, cautioning that if the government fails to take remedial measures, the serious agitation shall be started by the locals.

The incidents have created the scene of terror in the entire area and according to the correspondent parents have restrained the activities of the in children outside their homes. “We fail to understand that are we humans or some useless creatures for whom the authorities do not bother,” said a local resident. He stated further that the dogs have created terror on the streets of the area and the reluctance from the authorities in curbing this menace is questionable. People also stated that the stray dogs are terrorizing the children and other school going kids as already several among them have been severely attacked.

Earlier, Dogs in north Kashmir’s Handwara unleashed terror when more than five persons including three women were bitten by canines, injuring them critically. According to the KNS north Kashmir correspondent, more than five persons were seriously injured by the dogs in various areas of Handwara. The injured were later taken to hospital where there condition was serious till the last reports came in. The reports informed further that the persons have head injuries and the canines attacked them on face. “I could not believe that the persons have been attacked by the dogs. It seems that some wild beasts have attacked them,” said one of the Doctors at District Hospital Handwara.

Pertinently, World Health Organization (WHO) earlier had suggested that the dog-sterilization program would be successful only when carried on fast-track mode. The WHO standards recommend around 70% of the dogs should be sterilized within three months of start of the process. However, according to experts, it is not logically possible in Kashmir given the huge number of stray dogs and the fact that the process has already hit many roadblocks. (KNS)
