Punjab Government has launched a special drive to build new ultra modern infrastructure to treat cancer patients in government hospitals. Rs 300 Crore has been sanctioned by the state government for setting up cancer units in the three government hospitals at Aritsar, Faridkot and Patiala.pulging this here today Mr. Madan Mohan Mittal said that Government to set up another cancer unit at Civil Hospital Sangrur in collaboration with Tata Memorial Centre Mumbai with the cost of Rs. 5 Crore.  He said that Government has taken this step keeping in view the increasing number of cancer patients in Punjab.

Minister said that alongwith creating infrastructure department would also  soon recruit cancer specialist doctors  and department is also in the process of identifying doctors and nurses that can be trained for assisting in cancer treatment. Mittal said that best equipment would be set up at cancer treatment units. He added that Government had decided to take services of TMC to place orders to purchase required equipment needed in radiotherapy units and laboratories required for radiotherapy units. He said that specialists from TMC and PGI, Chandigarh, have given their consent to train our doctors and other medical staff in treating cancer patients.

Vini Mahajan Principal Secretary Health and Family welfare Department, Punjab said that the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board of India has given the go-ahead to the construction of radiotherapy bunkers at Government Hospitals to set up linear accelerators that will help in the treatment of patients suffering from various types of cancer. She said that work is in progress for construction of radiotherapy bunkers at Government Hospitals.She said that a team of oncologists from TMC recently visited Punjab and assessed the facilities available here. They have also performed live surgeries and had discussions with the doctors about the latest advancements in the field of cancer.
