The Punjab Government today issued detailed instructions to all Colleges and Universities and professional college in the state to check the menace of ragging with iron hand and reiterated its resolve of zero tolerance towards ragging. In a communiqué, Punjab Higher Education Minister Surjit Sngh Rakhra asked Secretary, Higher Education to communicate to all educational institutions that for any incident of ragging in any college or university, the institutional head would be held accountable. He said that the Punjab Government is taking this sensitive matter very seriously and is committed to provide better educational environment to students. The Higher Education Minister directed administration of colleges or universities to make it compulsory for students and their parents to submit anti ragging affidavit during the course of admission. Those who found guilty will be penalized as per guidelines drawn by UGC.Rakhra also ordered the concerned institutions to start a separate anti-ragging helpline number and help desk for the convenience of students. Such helpline number must be highlighted on notice board of all departments. He appealed students to desist from ragging their juniors and instead become their friend, philosopher and counselor, welcoming them in college life with open arms.
