After days of sweltering heat, the state capital here got much needed respite Wednesday as heavy rains lashed the city. The rains which started early morning continued well past 9 a.m. and brought the mercury down by a few notches. The regional Met office said the rains were result of a local weather disturbance formed due to the heat wave. The Met Department said some eastern parts of the state may see pre-monsoon showers over the next two days."The monsoon is expected to hit the state June 29," Met officials said.

Uttar Pradesh has been reeling under a severe heat wave for the past one week, with temperatures touching a high of 48 degrees Celsius in many parts including Mahoba, Hamirpur, Jhansi in Bundelkhand region and Allahabad in central UP.Average temperature in the state capital has been hovering around 46 degrees celsius through most of June and the woes have been compounded by incessant power outages. The rains Wednesday morning have, however, led to water logging in some parts of Thakurganj in the old city, Gomtinagar, Nishatganj, Takrohi, Aminabad, Indiranagar and other areas.
