The serene, natural valleys in the state of Karnataka have abundant lakes, both naturally forming water bodies as well as artificial lakes. In recent times, the importance of these lakes serving as the source of irrigation and consumption has been recognized. The government has taken steps to replenish and maintain these natural treasures. These regions are perfect weekend getaways Bangalore.The steps take by the Government and public alike have resulted in the restoration of the ecology and natural beauty of the region. This, in turn, has also lead to an increase in tourism in the region. One can engage in activities such as trekking, boating, bird watching, nature walks. There are numerous resorts in Bangalore outskirts where you can unwind after a day of fun-filled activities by the lakes. Lush, green properties such as Discovery Village in Nandi Hills or Kabini are perfect for a day of adventure or some relaxed, quality time with your loved ones.

1. Ulsoor lake

One of the oldest and largest in the city, Ulsoor Lake is situated in the eastern part of Bangalore. Sprawling over an area of 120 acres, with a 3-kilometer shoreline and numerous islands, this stunning water body has existed since the time of Kempe Gowda. It is easily accessible due to the proximity to MG Road.

You can go boating, trek around the extensive garden areas, or just relax and take in the beauty of Ulsoor, the area that was named after the gigantic lake.

2. Hebbal lake

Hebbal Lake is one of the three lakes created during the reign of Kempe Gowda, in the 16th century. Damming the natural valley and making bunds towards the north of Bangalore city constructed this “tank”.

Just an hour away from the main city, this lake park is the ideal place to visit early in the morning and enjoy the captivating sunrise, do yoga or to walk by the waterfront.

3. Lalbagh lake

 A paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers alike, this water body situated in the heart of the city is plentiful with nature’s bounty. The famous Lalbagh Botanical Gardens is situated north of the lake. It is home to dozens of aviary species and ancient trees that they call home in the midst of this fast-paced metropolis.

The twin islands are unique as there are pathways that lead to each other.

4. Madiwala lake

Spread over a hundred hectares, this extensive water body was built overnight around 300 years ago. Obtaining its name from the “madiwalas” or the local washermen who dwelled in this region, the lake was the water source for surrounding villages and fields.

Over the last decade, the Karnataka State Forest Department has successfully managed to replenish the lake to its ancient splendor.

5. Sankey tank

Constructed in 1882 to safeguard the city against drought, Sankey Tank is connected to the Miller and Dharmambudhi tanks and extends over 35 acres. It is home to a variety of species, making it the best spot in the city for bird watching.

The Mayura Sankey Boat Club offers numerous fun-filled activities from picnicking to boating on the island situated centrally in this artificial lake.

6. Hirekolale lake

4-5 hours away from the capital of Karnataka, is Chikmagalur which is well-known all over the world for its expansive coffee plantations and brilliant climate. Situated here is the man-made Hirekolale Lake.

Built to supply water to the neighboring villages, Hirekolale Lake is picturesque and mesmerizing, with views of the Mullayanagiri hills. Take a stroll through a coffee plantation or plan a day out by the scenic lakeside.

7. Kukkarahalli lake

Right in the middle of Mysore city, lies the Kukkarahalli Lake, which was created in 1864. This served as a source of water to the city for a vast period of time. There are over 170 aviary species in the region including migratory birds, some flying in from as far as Siberia!

You can spot thousands of these birds roosting in the winter months but the lake is worth visiting all year round. Catch the sunset from the watchtower, or trek around the lake and enjoy nature within Mysore.
