Union Joint Secretary Fisheries Department Sagar Mehta reviewed working of fisheries sector in Jammu and Kashmir during a two day visit here.The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary Animal, Sheep and Fisheries Department Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon.Director Fisheries R N Pandita, Joint Directors and others officers were also present in the meeting.Dr Samoon briefed about the status of various schemes and programmes being implemented in Jammu and Kashmir.He also gave brief about status of achievements made by the fisheries department in the implementation of blue revolution.While expressing satisfaction over the implementation and progress of various schemes for the promotion of fisheries sector, Mehta assured liberal funding for further exploiting the abundant fresh water resources in Jammu and Kashmir.Giving details about the potential of fisheries sector in the economy of the J&K, Dr Samoon asked for setting up of Cold Water Fisheries Institute where study on different types of fishes, water bodies and additional trainings can be conducted.Asking for special funding for these projects, Dr Samoon also projected the need for a designated fish market in Srinagar with a projected cost of Rs 5 crore besides Fish tourist villages across J&K at projected cost of Rs 20 crore.He also asked for liberal funding of Aquarium for Srinagar at a proposed cost of Rs 500 crore for promotion of tourism sector in J&K.Joint Secretary assured liberal funding of all these projects besides facilitating technical cooperation between various known fish producing companies and J&K.
