Deputy Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Agrawal today underscored the need for keeping the younger generations of the country abreast with sacrifices made by our great freedom fighters to imbibe a feeling of nationalism and patriotism amongst them.Addressing the visitors after inaugurating a twelve days Jallianwala Bagh Centenary Exhibition, organised by The department of Culture Affairs, Archives, Archaeology and Museums, Punjab along with the Partition Museum, Amritsar, here at the Guru Nanak Bhawan, the Deputy Commissioner said that it was our moral duty to perpetuate the glorious legacy of our freedom fighters amongst our younger generations. He said that it would inspire our youngsters to serve the country by following the footsteps of our great heroes. Mr. Agrawal envisioned that this exhibition, which has covered minute details about the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, would leave a deep imprint on the young minds by apprising them about this national tragedy. The Deputy Commissioner said that this massacre took place on April 13, 1919, when a crowd of non-violent protestors, along with Vaisakhi pilgrims, were subjected to unprovoked and brutal firing by the troops of the British Indian Army, commanded by General Dyer. He said that this inhuman massacre proved to be the last nail in the coffin of the barbaric British rule. Mr. Agrawal said that the sacrifice of the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh massacre marked a decisive step towards ending the British rule in India. The Deputy Commissioner said that more than 1000 people were believed to have died in the action, which left the nation shocked to its core and paved the way for widespread public rebellion. He said that it was very important to apprise our younger generations about this tragic incident as this massacre ignited the national freedom Movement thereby leading to the freedom of the country from the British imperialism. Mr. Agrawal said the exhibition has depicted the agony of this barbaric incident through original materials in the form of newspapers, reports and photographs of that time, which was a laudable step. On the occasion, District Education Officer Mrs. Swarnjeet Kaur and others were also present.
