With an aim to further strengthen the dairy farming sector, cattle rearers in the state would be provided subsidy to buy up to 20 cattles from existing ten for which funds amounting to Rs. 20 Crores have already been released.Disclosing this here today, the Minister for Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Dairy Development Balbir Singh Sidhu expressed confidence that with this decision the farmers would get further financial support thereby making the dairy farming more viable and sustainable.  Pertinently, the Dairy Development Department was earlier providing the subsidy for purchase of up to ten animals only. Subsidy to the tune of 25% would be extended to General Category, Sidhu further said adding that Schedule Castes would be getting 33% subsidy. He further said that Captain Amarinder Singh government’s decision would fulfil another long pending demand of dairy sector. The dairy farmers had long been demanding a raise in the upper limit of the number of animals being covered under this subsidy earlier.Farmers by adopting dairy farming as a profession could fulfil their day to day house needs while income from traditional crops accrue once in six months. High quality sexed semen was being procured from abroad which will only produce calves, Sidhu said adding that this would also take care of the problem of stray animals besides enhancing income of farmers from milk production. On the occasion, Director Dairy Development S. Inderjeet Singh said that the special training session for dairy farming would commence from June 10 across all departmental training centres.
