The deputy commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma on Monday said that the district administration is committed to make Jalandhar a Tuberculosis (TB) free district by waging war through massive community engagement program.Presiding over World TB Day function observed by the health department, Mr Sharma said that there is need to involve all the stakeholders in this war to eradicate the disease and added that treatment of the disease is very much available in all government hospitals. Mr Sharma appealed the patients to complete the course of TB medicine and they must not leave it in midway as the disease may have long-term consequences on the health of the patients.The deputy commissioner said that a district level TB forum is being set up for the regular monitoring of the TB patients so that they do not leave the treatment in midway.Mr Sharma told that the forum will oversee the functioning of the TB program including the progress report, medicines, testing facilities, conducting sensitization activities and others in the hospitals.The deputy commissioner said that the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) will also be engaged for community mobilization and awareness activities in the district besides, the volunteers of Nehru Yuva Kendras (NYKs) will also be enrolled under the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program (RNTCP) and their services will also be taken for the sensitization of the community.Meanwhile, Civil surgeon Dr Rajesh Kumar Bagga said that coughing longer than three weeks with green, yellow, or bloody sputum, sudden weight loss, fatigue, fever, night sweats, chills, chest pain,Shortness of breath are symptoms of the disease.He said that the district has 12 treatment units where the medical tests of the suspected case are being conducted and medicines are being offered to the patients.He said that under the program, the health teams will make the people aware of Tuberculosis, how it spreads, how it is diagnosed and treatment so that the disease can be eliminated completely from the country by 2025. On the occasion, District TB Officer Dr Rajiv Sharma, District Immunization Officer Dr Tarsem Lal and others were present.
