The Department of Foreign Languages at Lovely Professional University (LPU) organized dramatization of world-renowned French playwright Molière’s farcical comedy ‘L’ Avare’s at LPU Stage, today. Occasion was French Theatre Show- “L’ Avare (the Miser)” presented at Shanti Devi Mittal Auditorium of the University. Directed by famous Indian theatre artist Varun Kapoor,   the theme of the show highlighted “Independence-Seeking Youth” and “Generation Gap in Thinking”. For the best performance of this play, Alliance Française (recognized by the French Ministry of Education), which has collaboration with LPU, had assisted in bringing the artists from its Delhi Centre. Alliance Francaise also keeps on providing updated guide lines to LPU Faculty in French Language about courses, official French exams, French culture-activities at LPU Campus. Such an endeavour especially favoured all those students who aspire for higher studies in France.Since 17th Century, many of this play’s versions have been staged and filmed in different languages world across. LPU students of all professions found a cathartic effect for their modern day humane and revolutionary understanding, and thus enjoyed every bit of it. A French classic by Charles-Antoine Coypel Molière, the 5-act comedy L’ Avare (Kanjoos in its Hindustani adaptation and ‘The Miser’ in English) is a farcical comedy about a great miser and his family-members, servants and acquaintances.

The plot revolves around the classic conflict of love and money and the follow-on clash throws up funny situations. This results in a tug-of-war between the miser and independence-seeking youth. The central character- a widower miser and a tyrannical father- is ever obsessed with wealth. Under recovery of debt, he intends to marry a teenager with the power of wealth, and also keeps on forcing his young daughter to marry an old rich-man to save any dowry. Although he is over sixty, he is ever seen keen in arranging marriage with that young girl, who is found in love with miser’s son. Both the son and daughter are humane and revolutionary and get their wishes fulfilled as the story proceeds. The complications are only resolved at the end, meanwhile bringing roars of laughter from the audience created out of the amusing characters, situations and dialogues. Highlighting, one of the Centres of Professional Enhancement at LPU, which streamlined collaboration between Alliance Francaise and LPU to promote French culture, assisted Department of Foreign Languages to host the show. The presentation of French play “L’Avare” has been made in the same framework.
