The Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar  Varinder Kumar Sharm today announced to make local Virsa Vihar a hub of the socio-cultural activities in the region to perpetuate the glorious cultural heritage of the state amongst the coming generations. Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the two days Basant Mela here at the local Virsa Vihar, the Deputy Commissioner said that it was need of the hour to acquaint the youngsters about the rich cultural heritage of the state. He said that since ages Punjab has not only been the sword arm of the country but it has been a repository of rich cultural legacy, which has been passed to people generations after generations. However, Mr. Sharma strenuous efforts need to be made to ensure that the coming generations were apprised of the glorious culture of the state.The Deputy Commissioner said that for this purpose the Virsa Vihar could play an instrumental role. He said that an open auditorium would be constructed at a cost of Rs 10 lakh within two months. Mr. Sharma also said that after Basant festival now the administration would also organize special Baisakhi festival after two months.

The Deputy Commissioner also said that training for classical singing and music would also be imparted from the Virsa Vihar in coming days. Likewise, Mr. Sharma said that special summer camp would also be organized during the summer vacations for the students. He said that the basic idea was to ensure that Virsa Vihar was developed as epi-centre socio-culture activities.On the occasion a dance competition was organized amongst school students where Ms. Pooja, Ms. Gitika and Ms. Meenakshi were judges. Similarly music competition was also organized where noted Ms. Vandana Sharma and noted folk singer Mr. Dalwinder Dyalpuri were the judges. A kite flying competition was also held on the occasion.Prominent amongst others present on the occasion included Mr. Alok Sondhi, Mr. Deepak Jalandhari, Prof. Inderjit Singh, Captain IS Dhami, District Education Officer Mr. Harvinder Pal Singh, Deputy District Education Officer Mr. Anil Awasthi, Principal Ms. Maninder Kaur, social activist Ms. Veenu Kamboj, Secretary Red Cross Mr. Paramjit Singh and others.
