Mulberry plantation drive held at Jagti Township

The Department of Sericulture Development today conducted a Mulberry plantation drive here at Migrant Colony Jagti.The drive was launched by Director Sericulture Gulzar Ahmad Shabnum and Relief & Rehabilitation Commissioner, M. L. Raina in presence of Project Executive Officer Jammu, Javid Ahmad, District Sericulture Officer Jammu, Farhat Abass, Tehsildar Relief and Rehabilitation, Shohab Lateef and other concerned.On the occasion, the Director Sericulture said that the Department has been focusing on urban as well as institutional mulberry plantation to ensure the beautification, landscaping, eco-conservation and maintenance of healthy environment within the protected establishments and surroundings of households mostly in urban areas.He said that the programme is underway in Jammu division and shall take off in Kashmir division in March next, where Shiekhpora Migrant Colony is being covered under the programme.The Department of Sericulture is targeting plantation of one thousand highly improved Japanese ornamental mulberry plants at each colony during this season, he said. Shabnam sought the cooperation of the residents of Jagti Township for proper upkeep and maintenance of the plants aimed at benefiting them in the long run. He also deliberated on the commercial use of mulberry plants and said that a lot of scope for employment is embodied in the sericulture sector.Relief & Rehabilitation Commissioner also spoke on the occasion and lauded the initiative of the Sericulture Department. He said that the Mulberry plantation shall add to the beauty of the township and change the panorama of the surroundings.He said that other migrant colonies would also be brought under mulberry plantation in future with the active support of Sericulture Department.P.E.O Jammu and Tehsildar Jagti also spoke on the occasion and highlighting the advantages of the mulberry plantation.
