Generally farmers having less land lose the moral due to less income but farmer Malkiat Singh of village Jhandemajra with his hard work has converted his only 2 acres of land into a good source of income. He is doing vegetable cultivation in 2 acres of land. The vegetables being cultivated are primary constituents of salad. From vegetable cultivation, this farmer earns annually Rs. 7 lacs after deducting all expenditures. For good income he is doing marketing by himself.Elaborating this, farmer Malkiat Singh said that he was doing vegetable cultivation since last 12 years. Earlier he used to cultivate traditional crops but later he adopted vegetable cultivation under crop diversification program and with patience, hard work & dedication, positive results were obtained. In the mean time besides vegetable cultivation he also started taking personal interest in the marketing. Initially he faced lot of problems in marketing but he had never lost his patience and in the due course, the vegetable cultivation emerged as a good source of income for him.
Later on stepping in the field of vegetable cultivation, he started marketing his produce to the vegetable suppliers of reputed hotels in Chandigarh and started selling his produce by himself. He never compromised on the quality, as such, the vegetables were sold hand-held. He made firm clients now, and he is earning regular income. He primarily cultivates Broccoli, Capsicum, Lettuce, Celery, Lemon Grass, Chinese cabbage & Red cabbage. He appealed the farmers to adopt crop diversification program.Talking about this Deputy Director (Horticulture) Karamjit Singh said that Horticulture department not only provides training to the farmers but also provides tools at subsidized rates. He said that Punjab Government has established centre of excellence at Kartarpur where training regarding vegetable cultivation is being provided to the farmers. He appealed the willing farmers to get training of poly-house and other modern techniques from the department so that maximum farmers could obtain maximum benefit.
