Punjab Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh today warned against the social unrest in Punjab due to deterioration in the economic and law and order situation. He also lashed out at the political betrayal by Joginderpal Jain at the behest of the Akali Dal president Sukhbir Badal.

Addressing a distinguished gathering of lawyers, at a function organised by the District Bar Association Moga here today, he said, with the incidents like the broad day light brutal killing of an Assistant Sub Inspector of Police in Amritsar by an Akali leader and the merciless beating up of an Assistant Inspector General of Police in Ludhiana by another Youth Akali Dal leader were ominous signs for Punjab which needed to be checked.

Capt Amarinder maintained that there were scores of such incidents which were cause of concern for the people particularly the investors. He pointed out, no investors were prepared to come to Punjab rather the industry was moving out. With the result, he argued, the unemployment was growing and youth were falling for bad habits. He said, Punjab had about 50 lakh unemployed youth who were feeling restless. He said, when people do not have jobs they can certainly fall victim to various ills which can be a cause of grave social unrest.

The former Chief Minister asked the government to spell out what difference it had made to the lives of people. Referring to the promises of surplus power, he pointed out, even now when there was virtually no demand, there were power cuts as long as six hours even in the urban areas.Capt Amarinder said, the power projects being claimed to be set up by the state government were in private sector and without any commitment to the state. He said, while the state government snatched away the land from the farmers and offered it to the private companies it did not take any commitment from them about how much power these will provide to the state.

Prominent among those present on the occasion included the DBA president Sunil Garg, party candidate Vijay Sathi, Punjab Youth Congress general secretary Sukhminder Danny and others.
