The electric lines passing through Wani Mohalla, Gonipora and Hayhaima villages in this north Kashmir’s frontier district are endangering the lives of the people as there are no electric poles in these areas. The wires which connect the areas and the respective transformers pass over trees and other temporary sheds and can prove fatal any time.“Not a single electric pole can be found in all these villages. The electric lines have been erected over trees. We have no permanent lineman. Even a need-based employee of PDD posted here is rarely seen,” a local Mohammad Shafi told GNS.“The absence of electric poles poses a grave threat to our lives especially the children who often play under trees. The electric wires can fall down anytime,” a woman said.Apart from the electric pole issue, all the three villages face common problems: “There are no essential services including potable water and electricity. The roads are also in dilapidated conditions, said the village elders.“We had the facility of potable water but three months ago, the (water) scheme is defunct due to some snag in main pipelines. Now our women are the worst sufferers as they have to travel a few kilometers daily to fetch the water for drinking,” the village representatives told GNS.“We approached the district administration several times and put our problems before it but to no avail. Authorities seem to be lying in a deep slumber,” they said.“Today we have some hope as the administration is run by the governor,” the locals said and appealed Governor N N Vohra to look into the issues. The people demand potable water, electric poles, and end to frequent power cuts.
